A warm, cosy home in winter is a wonderful thing, but keeping your home well heated can sometimes put a strain on home finances. As home heating costs continue to rise, consumers are looking for ways to stay warm and keep their energy costs within budget.
Lowering winter utility bills usually means adding insulation, caulking windows and installing storm windows and doors. In addition to these steps, there is an easy way to cut up to 10 percent of your heating costs. Turn on the ceiling fan.
Ceiling fans traditionally have been used more for summertime comfort, but energy experts say ceiling fans are useful in winter, too. According to Michael Lamb, a spokesperson for the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Clearinghouse, ceiling fans can cut winter heating expenses by 5 to 10 percent.
"Ceiling fans do a lot of nice things, "said Lamb. "They prevent air stratification, which is layering of warm and cool air in a room. This is particularly true in rooms with high ceilings-warm air rises up while cooler air settles near the floor. A ceiling fan circulates the warm air more evenly. Considering that ceiling fans use relatively small amounts of electricity, they're really a good energy bargain."
"Ceiling fans have been around since the 19th century," explained James Barrett of Hunter Fan company, the largest manufacturer of ceiling fans in the world. "In winter, ceiling fans can help make a room feel warmer, so you can turn down the thermostat and save money."
